One needs to remove the back plastic panel to get to the switch and then remove the switch assembly in order to clean out the old melted rubber. Supplied angled screwdriver is useless if you are replacing this part due to the melted rubber phenomenon (bad engineering decision to use this cheap rubber piece that melts into the switch!). That and the cleaning portion takes the longest time. There are youtube videos so check them out! New rubber switch cover fit perfectly and now works like a new switch!

I ordered this cover to replace a worn one over the trunk lid switch on my 2011 Toyota Avalon. This cover comes with two screws and a small, angled screwdriver but no installation instructions. I searched online for a video that shows how to remove and replace the switch cover. The rubber cover itself fits just like the original one and is simple to install with the two screws. The angled screwdriver was extremely difficult to use, and I abandoned it for fear of damaging the head of the coverโs Philips screw. Instead, I bought an inexpensive long shaft screwdriver which worked very well to remove and replace the screws. The time consuming aspect, which is not a fault of this part, is removing the thick, melted rubber goo left from the worn cover. It is a laborious task involving lots of careful scraping with a flat device like a flathead screwdriver or a plastic case opener and some rubbing alcohol. Once all of the old debris is cleaned off, it takes less than a minute to screw on the new cover.Overall, this was a very inexpensive DIY repair that surely cost much less than paying the Toyota dealer to do it. Just be sure to watch a video online beforehand so youโll know exactly how to do it.

Actually works well but the old one may leave a mess. If so you have to scrape around the switch so it will move again.Included screw driver is ok just a little too long to remove the screws as they come out

As others have stated, the original 4Runner lift gate release button deteriorates over tim and becomes very messy. This replacement fit perfectly. My advice is that you take the time to clean the old housing very well prior to installing this one and you will be very pleased with it. It is a bit tedious to remove and replace the housing so be patient and it will turn out fine.
