Update: I’ve come to realize this stuff is basically permanent. Over six weeks later, the color turned into a still bright but slightly muted version of the same bright purple. Perfectly within my range of acceptable. By this time it was time to bleach and re-dye it because my dark roots were showing.Seriously, this stuff is great.SHORT VERSION:Three days has been enough to convince me that this is the best stuff out there. I have had purple hair for a very long time, and I am a very active person, and yet even when it’s fresh, this stuff does not run under extreme conditions, whereas every other dye brand I have tried does – even this unsealed vs. other brands sealed. Based on this early experience I expect it to last for a very longtime in comparison to others. If you want a vivid, unnatural hair color, long-term, don’t play around with the consumer brands. This is what professionals use, and for very good reason. It stays in hair, yet comes out of most everything else (I would avoid getting it on fabric though!) fairly easily. However, seeing how well it’s sticking to my hair, I doubt I could recommend it for short term use. The directions say it can be bleached out and dyed over to a medium to dark color, but I don’t intend to try. I like my purple.LONG VERSION:So, I’ve had purple hair for a very long time (I even sometimes jokingly claim that it’s natural). I’ve used very nearly every brand I’ve been able to find. I am also a very active person, and usually have a problem with dye bleeding when I sweat, so I figured trying out a professional brand might be wise – if it holds up to rock stars, it might work for me, right? So I bought it, it arrived in a timely fashion, and this has been my experience:Day 1:Applied the dye. The first thing I noticed about it is that it’s a nice royal purple, not reddish like other dyes I’ve tried – a good thing in my book; this is exactly the color I’m always aiming for. It’s applied with a bowl and brush, which I usually use anyway as it’s much neater than most applicator bottles. It went on easy, and gets good coverage; my hair is short and about 1/3 of the tube was enough for my whole head. I probably even used more than I needed just out of habit, actually. The instructions say to leave it in for no more than 20 minutes or it may actually make it fade faster. I was skeptical of this, but followed the instructions to the best of my ability anyway (it took several minutes to “paint” all my hair so I couldn’t be very precise); I will let you know just how well it works. After the 20 minutes were up, I stepped in the shower to rinse it off, and that’s where this gets exciting. There is a reason this stuff says it’s for professional use only, and it’s not that it can be dangerous if used improperly – it’s for the mess it can make without professional equipment to contain it!The first thing I noticed was that the water was much brighter than I expected for the amount of dye I used (which led to my suspicion that I may have used more than I really needed). The second thing I noticed was that the water dyed my skin. The third thing I noticed was that after about 0.5 seconds of contact with the dye-water, my entire shower was covered in purple streaks. Everything was purple. Everything. My entire body, my shower, everything that came into contact with the diluted form of this dye for just a matter of seconds.Though it came off easily enough with about half an hour of washing and scrubbing (incidentally, my bathroom looks cleaner now than it has in years, not sure if it’s just from the intensity of the scrubbing or if I left some dye behind and the blue tone is canceling out the yellow stains that have set in over the years), the next time I use this I fully intend to rinse my hair out in the sink…and line it with plastic first. I strongly recommend having plenty of soap, toothpaste, bleach, and Mr. Clean Magic Erasers or knockoffs thereof on hand. Still, if this is what happened after half a second of contact with the diluted dye, I have high hopes for how well it will stay in my hair after 20 minutes of contact with the concentrated stuff! Now rinsed and dry, after having been applied to my hair , which was pink due to residual dye from the last time I colored it, it’s still a fantastic royal purple, exactly my favorite shade. So far, everything’s looking good!Day 2:Washed hair at night; water was clear, though a good amount of pigment came out with shampoo. Made no apparent difference in hair’s overall color, though noticing a fantastic iridescence on just-conditioned hair that hasn’t appeared with other dye brands. Tomorrow is my first day of training since dyeing my hair; this is the real test…Day 3:It is perhaps time to explain the kind of training I do on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I take a body conditioning class through my college, which is taught by a remarkable woman who coaches professional athletes as well as amateurs. My heart rate usually reaches 95% of my maximum safe heart rate, and I leave sweating so much that I look more like I’ve been swimming than running and lifting weights. The dye did not run.Every other brand of dye I have every used runs after this kind of training, at the very least for the first week. This stuff? Stayed in place; the closest it came to running was a small amount rubbing off on my forehead from my fringe (easily cleaned up with soap and water) – and I didn’t even get a chance to seal it like I have with other brands!I believe this is enough evidence for me to deliver my semi-final verdict. I am fully convinced that this stuff is the best out there.

*updated September 2017I began using bright colors in my hair when I was twelve, and in the last twenty two years I have tried just about every brand there is. Pravana is by far the most long lasting color option out there. (I do use Joico, Arctic Fox, and Sparks sometimes, but they don’t stay in my hair as long). Ion colors are not worth using, and are by far the worst I have tried. If you want excellent results, use excellent products. Morrocanoil is a favorite of mine to rehydrate hair after bleaching, as is Olaplex 1, and 2. My favorite shampoos are Oribe, Kerastase, and Caviar. I use Batiste dry shampoo (it doesn’t strip much color, is low priced, and works so well that I only wash my hair once a week). I have my routine and products down solid, and as a result am able to strip my hair again and again, but it still remains shiny and healthy looking. I usually only touch up colors once a month, and this is only to rehydrate and add shine, not because the colors have faded. Pastels are higher maintenance, and I touch them up every week/ every other week depending on shade.Dark colors don’t require your hair to be lightened to a nine or ten, but I prefer to have my hair pre lightened to the color of the inside of a banana peel anyway. Platinum hair as a foundation equals beautiful fade when your colors do start to go. Instead of having ugly brassy colors, you will have nice looking pastels.I slather my hair in coconut oil the night before bleaching (I like Schwartzkopf developer and use forty), and apply bleach directly onto oiled hair the next day. I don’t find that adding Olaplex 1 to developer does much. However, after rinsing out the bleach in cold water, I apply Olaplex 1 (don’t shampoo the bleach out, just rinse). I squeeze out excess water and Olaplex mix, and then work Olaplex 2 in as well. This is left in overnight. In the morning I dampen my hair and work Morrocanoil into it. It seems like a lot of product, but through trial and error I’ve found a great way to keep my super processed hair strong and awesome. I leave all this in for at least a few hours or overnight again. (I wear hats and put my hair up to leave the house during this process- no shame in my game). I rinse and wash in cold over the sink, and don’t bother using conditioner since I will either be bleaching again or adding in Pravana. I have to strip my color twice as my hair is dark, a level 3, so this whole process gets repeated again.Dilute Pravana colors with regular conditioner to make your own shades and pastels. Don’t shampoo after the rinse, just rinse with cold water to minimize color bleeding. Leave hair unwashed for about a week to keep your color longer.Pravana’ green isn’t green. It is teal. If you want green you can mix your own shades using yellow (regular or neon depending on how bright you want to go) for your base and adding tiny amounts of blue. Arctic Fox has some nice shades of green, but they don’t stay in my hair as long.Pravan’s silver makes an awesome toner that lasts indefinitely if you want an ash blonde look, but you have to cut it with conditioner a bit over half the total mix. (The super blonde pic I added I used the silver as toner mixed one part Pravana and two and a half parts conditioner)Happy coloring! I’m happy to answer questions as well if you have any.

I color my hair bright, bright Little Mermaid red. Naturally my hair is dark brown/black. I use “Loreal HiColor Hilights” in “Magenta” (Magenta gives me a more cool toned red instead of a warm toned that their shade “Red” gives you) from Sally Beauty Supply to dye my roots red and I maintain everything else with Pravana Red. I haven’t dyed the ends with anything else since the first time I originally colored them, over a year ago. I use no developer with the Pravana. I just apply it straight to the hair and leave on for a couple hours. It’s not damaging so even with bright red hair I’ve been able to grow my hair pretty long!I had my hair this color before and used Manic Panic instead of the Pravana, that was before I knew about Pravana. Within one wash most of the Manic Panic color would be down the drain. And that was with using ice cold water! With Pravana I can use warm water again! Yay for hot baths! Even with warm water my color will last a good month of twice a week washings ( I use dry shampoo between washings) before I need to reapply the red! If I’m not being lazy I can mix some in with my conditioner when I wash my hair and retouch that way and it keeps it looking great!I will never go back to using Manic Panic. Pravana gave me what I was told Red could never do. It has amazing lasting power!

VERY purple. I had a friend help me dye and we made a huge mess in my apartment. The color is amazing and hopefully will last longer than my last dye. I love the color and have gotten so many compliments on it.BUT, I washed my hair for the first time after dyeing it and it looks like a unicorn exploded in my shower. I had to go buy bleach today because none of the other cleaning agents/household chemicals I had (hydrogen peroxide, Acetone, shower cleaner, multisurface cleaner, and 70% concentrated isopropyl alcohol) got all of the purple out of the tiles. Everything was still varying shades of lavender even after probably a solid half hour of scrubbing and rinsing.Update: I purchased a shower cleaner that contains bleach, and it got the stains out of the tile. My roommate even commented on how good the shower looked.

Been using Pravana vivids for a couple years now in a few colors, mostly pinks. Tried this shade out and it barely took! I’m a natural blonde but have also lightened my hair to near platinum, even with this stark hair barely any color took. I hit the local beauty supply store and picked up a couple colors from Pravana- Magenta (bright pink) and Wild Orchid (bright purple pink). I mixed half the pink that didn’t take and half magenta for the majority of my hair and half pink and half wild orchid for my tips. The results were stunning. By itself this particular shade is a bust, but mixed with brighter colors gave me amazing results!

Best red hair dye I’ve ever used!!!!Not only is it the perfect red but MOST IMPORTANTLY it doesnt fade quickly like so many others. The picture posted with the black glove showing is after 4 or 5 washes. Little over a month since I dyed it.I thought maybe my eyes were playing tricks on me because I’ve always had to touch up my color after 3 weeks to a month. So I decided to touch it up like usual just to see if it really had faded and I was just imagining it hadn’t.The second picture is the touch up….. LOOKS ALMOST THE SAME! Just a little deeper red but still bright!Incredibly pleased with this Pravana product and very curious to see how many washes I can go before it actual starts to fade out!Along with not fading it also has not dried out my hair like the Ion red did or the L’Oreal on my ends.Lastly! A huge plus is it barely tints my bathtub with a pinkish color which actually may be just the left over mess from when I used Ion colors. Do NOT use Ion Red if you have a white shower….. never has any dye stained worst than that one.For anyone wondering, because I get questions all the time and wish someone would have broken it down when I first started. (***I am not a professional, just a lot of trail and error on my own hair***)FIRST TIME DYING:- Natural hair color: Dirty Blonde.- Length: Just hitting my shoulders.***Even with already having blondish hair I choose to bleach my hair the first time because I knew I wanted the brightest red possible. Ive found the Wella Power Lightener works the best.- 3 Boxes of Pravana ChromaSilk Vivids Red with a 1/4 or half of the Pravana ChromaSilk Magenta mixed in. (This has prevented other products from fading into the orangy red and let it fade into a pinky red. Not sure this product would even fade into the orange but I rather be safe than sorry) Because this product doesn’t require any developer I let it sit in my hair over night before washing it out. (Better have some dark sheets or a towel on your pillow with a hair cap on lol it’s messy)THE TOUCH UP PROCESS:- Roots: 2 boxes of L’Oreal Highcolor HiLights Red , mixed with a little less than half a tube of the L’Oreal Magenta. I can get away with just using 1 box of Red and a squirt of Magenta but I rather lather it on my roots and have extra then have to ration it all the way through. I use any 30 developer and also have used 20 developer in the past but find the 30 brightens the red and matches the Pravana better. I leave in for 30 minutes like the box says then wash it out.***I only use L’Oreal on my roots because it already has bleach in the product. I could just bleach my roots then use the Pravana all over but it’s tough enough dying your own hair. Trying to bleach the back of my head without overlapping the already dyed parts would be a nightmare. With the L’Oreal not being as harsh, I don’t have to worry about overlapping.- 3 boxes of Pravana ChromaSilk Vivids Red with 1/4 Magenta for the rest of my hair. I do slap this red on my roots as well just so I know I haven’t missed any spots. I haven’t found it darkens my already freshly dyed roots. Leave in over night then wash out.I was worried the two reds wouldn’t match but they are identical!Hopefully this is helpful and answers some questions!

UPDATE: 11/26/20 -Months later and Pravana still rocks!! I added a photo showing what my hair looks like after a month of no touch ups – even with fading, it still looks decent and people keep asking me how I got it to ombré, lol. I also added a pic showing my new dark cherry color – easy recipe. For long hair like mine it takes about a quarter of a tube each: Red, Magenta, Wild Orchid and a tiny bit of Violet (about the size of a quarter). Doubled up the volume with hair conditioner and left it in at least two hours. I also mixed more of the same formula but with twice the conditioner and put it in an empty bottle for touch up about two to three weeks from now. More details of process in original review below.Original review: I was able to make my own custom raspberry color! 🙂 Photos show the color in the sun and in the shade.BASE: I naturally have level 2 dark brown hair that had gotten a caramel balayage about 8 months ago. After a few rounds of clay lightener (with volume 30 developer) to refresh and get the lighter bits higher up the mane, I was able to get strands in various levels – from 6 to some as light as 9. Took several days but it was worth it – no major breakage and saved some money. If you have DARK hair like mine, you need to lighten it first!PREP & CLEANUP: Used an old towel around my shoulders and it stains so gloves are a must. Conditioner or Vaseline applied around the neck and hairline took care of those areas. For cleaning the stained sink and tub, Dr. Bronner’s almond soap was fantastic!THE RECIPE: After seeing photos of the different colors on their own, I decided to attempt a raspberry shade that would compliment my skin tone. For the initial application I used 3 parts red, 2 parts magenta, 1 part violet. My hair is long so that translates to 1 tube of red, 2/3 tube of magenta and 1/3 tube of violet. No developer! And no conditioner mixed in this initial application. Left it on for 2 hours, rinsed until the water ran almost clear, then used Shea Moisture Purple Rice Water shampoo and conditioner. It took 2 weeks (on vacation) of being out in the sun daily, swimming in a lake, sweating with a variety of outdoor activities, and washing my hair every other day before it started to fade (still looked decent though). I’m confident it’ll last longer working indoors – hoping to get 3-4 weeks between applications.MAINTENANCE: I did the same recipe as above but used less dye (about one third the original amounts) and doubled the volume with hair conditioner. Left it on for 4 hours before rinse, shampoo and conditioner. The color looks as good as the first time!Have gotten a ton of compliments and questions about what I’m using. I’m so glad Pravana is available on Amazon! Worth every penny!

As someone who will no longer touch their hair with bleach or permanent hair dye, I had to find a semi permanent dye that still gave me some depth of color I wanted and lasted more than a few weeks. Pravana is it.Almost all semi permanent hair dyes (especially ones that show up on darker hair) are going to stain and be hard to work with. I’ve been using them for almost 8 years now and have it pretty much down to a science. I used to have to dye on a Friday because I’d have stains on my head, neck, ears, hands etc and couldn’t go to work the day after. I now can dye the night before and go to work the next day.I got a lot of these tips from other Amazon reviews years back and some were my own discoveries. Nonetheless I’m passing them to you. If you do not want to stain yourself or your bathroom, try the following…- Cover your sink and counter top with a trash bag or old towel. No matter how careful you are, a drip is probably going to get on it.- Same with the floor. Put something under you.- Put Vaseline or aquaphor (a lot of it) all around your neck, forehead, temples, ears, arms (unless you wear long sleeves) sides of your cheeks.. everywhere color could touch (it will touch your skin no matter how careful you are).- get a cheap hair dressers cover. I wrap mine so the open sides wrap towards the front of me and the closed section is in the back. Pull it up to your back hairline and fasten as best you can. If it slips down, the vaseline gives you protection.- Wear gloves when you apply the dye, rinse the dye and the first and sometimes second time you wash with shampoo. Same with when you brush it after the first rinse or two. It’s going to bleed and will stain when the dye is still really potent in your hair so wearing gloves until it’s dry will prevent staining.- Use a color applying brush. It doesn’t matter too much on which end you start with since there’s no developer. I find starting at the top gets less dye on my arms. If you get dye on your skin, you can remove with old rag or paper towel at the end. I get all the color on and then wipe everything off with an old rag or paper towel. There’s usually no staining since I used Vaseline but if there’s any left, soap and water in the shower will take the rest off. I usually have no staining when I get out after the first rinse.- I usually leave the color in overnight since my hair is so dark. You do not need to do this. It has never harmed my hair (I think it feels amazing after) and I personally feel I get better color this way. I wrap my hair in a Walmart bag and make sure it’s covering my neck and tie the two handles towards the front of my head. Sometimes I double bag. Never had stains on my pillow when I woke up.- If you have a clogged or slow draining tub, you will have massive staining first couple of rinses. Even if you don’t you will probably have some staining. If any color gets on the walls as you are rinsing, immediately take a cup of water and rinse it. It may or may not get it all off or you may see a hue of color depending on how much dye was there. I have a trick for any color left.- Immediately after getting out of the shower, wrap your hair in an old towel. It will stain the towel and any drops can stain your floor. Get all the water out you can so your hair isn’t dripping.- spray your tub the second you can! I use the Clorox bathroom cleaner with bleach. It comes right off. Regular bleach in water will get it off too if you fill up your tub and let it sit. But I found the spray is much easier. Spray and rinse or spray and wipe. Both work for me. You can never tell the tub was purple or blue afterwards. Also works if you get it on tile or sink. Careful though because sometimes a blob of the dye has gotten directly on my sink and even with bleach it still had some discoloration. That’s why I cover my entire counter now.- Also watch out for doors and walls! You may think you are father away than you are and brush up against it. Same when applying the color. Careful not to get drips on the wall or front of your sink. A magic eraser has worked for walls for me before but sometimes nothing got the color out depending on the wood.I know I seems like a lot but it’s worth it to have colored hair without the damage. My hair is so long now and finally doesn’t feel like straw. Pravana gives me the best color on non bleached darker hair and it lasts a good 2 months for me. All those steps above ensure I am NOT staining my skin and needing to scrub it off before work and that my bathroom stays dye free.

I got blue topaz and loved everything about this product just beware you should bleach to a level 10 for better results, I tried to bleach to lvl 7-8 and it was ok but when I did it again but bleach it to a 10 and the end result was beautiful rich shiny excellent, I am very pleased with the end result and can’t wait to try different colors.

Product is as described. Pieces are colorful and sturdy. Took away one star bc there are two letters (one on each side of the horse) per horse. I would have like to have each unicorn have just one letter on it.
